[The feed flips on, and Mark's forehead and cheek fill half the frame at an awkward angle as he props up his communicator. Then he's smiling brightly, waving at everyone watching with all his signature goodwill.]

Everybody! I'm not sure exactly what the current flood is all about, but everything seems to be okay. As far as I could tell, anyway, I got a little distracted. [He beams and holds up a small clump of scaly grey feathers approximately the size of a tennis ball.]

The egg from Lakeside hatched this afternoon! I looked through a bunch of birdwatching field guides and bestiaries and pet care books, and I'm pretty sure she's a dire hummingbird. So say hello to Winifred, everyone, the newest passenger on board!

It's hard to check on a chick, but I just have a feeling she's a girl. I guess if she turns out not to be I can always call her Fred.

Why not? She's a hummingbird, I can feed her with a syringe until she's big enough to fly to a feeder. Plus I'm pretty sure she's imprinted on me. [As if on cue, Winifred pecks her beak into Mark's hand. He keeps his smile through the wince.] See? She's already attached.

That... might be what I'm worried about. Attached how? What kind of feeder are we talking about here?

...It was a bird. [Somebody doesn't know how to take thanks very well. But oh gosh it's cute, and she's peering closer into the camera like she can get a closer look before pulled away with an embarrassed face.]
