[This time Mark is feeling fit enough to post with video, and he assumes people are far less likely to be alarmed with the bruises now on his face than the swellings that used to be there. Still, he is not quite up to his old self and chooses voice again, if only because it's easier to pretend that way.]

Since there's still interest in learning dances and we could probably all use some levity right now, how does Sunday evening sound for everyone? If it's possible to reserve space in the gym I think that would be the best meeting place. If it isn't, we can probably take a classroom in the learning annex. My thoughts are that we'll start with some simple ballroom dances from 20th century Earth, but anything goes! Everyone's welcome to come.

[Private, Bush]
Welcome back! I'm sorry to greet you this way, but I had a note about your inmate.

[Private, Sylvanas]
We need to talk.

[Mark is up and about, more or less. He's moving slowly due to not being able to see well, his face is still swollen, his shoulder and right arm are functionally useless and currently he looks like a tenderized stake that's been skewered to be roasted. As such, he chooses voice today.]

Sylvanas needs to get out of Zero today. She probably should've been out yesterday or even the day before, but I've been, um. [Unconscious. Concussion and blood loss does not a talkative Mark make.] Not well. I would really appreciate it if someone would come with me to let her go.

On a, uh, related note. Have any of you had inmates who try to kill you every time you approach them? How did you get through to them?

[MARKETPLACE
“Junior scholar” has multiple meanings in the hierarchy of professors and advisors and deans, most of them relating to or synonymous with “heavy lifter”. Mark Lilly, a divinity and theology student at Jordan College, has been given a task by his teachers: go to the market and come back with the necessary supplies for the new school term.

It’s a large job for one man and he is tottering around the marketplace under arms laden with books, sheaves of blank paper, pens and pen-knives, sealing-wax and candles. The pile has already grown so high he has trouble seeing over the top, made more difficult by Annie perched on top of it. He knows better than to grumble, but looks distinctly un-amused as a box of pen nips falls from his arms and spills open over the ground.

JORDAN COLLEGE
Like any student Mark spends most of his time in classes or in discussion with professors around his school. Jordan College demands a lot of its scholars and Mark strives to meet the expectations, always attentive in his classes regardless of how little sleep he’s gotten, always quick to answer a question even if he’s unsure he’s correct. Annie mirrors his enthusiasm, flapping her wings or hopping on his shoulder to sound out in excitement whenever he answers correctly. Occasionally, someone else’s daemon hisses for her to calm down.

His studies this term are theology and European traditions, the ethics of peace and war, the history of saints, and modern criticism of the Magisterium. He’s pressing himself hard, asking questions of every scholar who might be more knowledgeable than he is.

BODLEIAN LIBRARY
Although his heart, brain, and money belong to Jordan College, sometimes the place just doesn’t have exactly what he needs. The Bodleian Library’s selection of books on divinity, ethics, and Magisterium history is much more complete, and when he can get away between classes Mark is frequently found wandering the stacks, poring over old texts and referencing them against more modern interpretations and criticisms. Annie flits through the high bookshelves, calling out to Mark whenever she finds a title that might prove promising.

THE IVORY SCORPION
The scholastic life isn’t all studying and work, however. Oxford has an ancient history of taking in the uneducated, shaping their minds, and letting them go out at night for a little drink. Mark favors the Ivory Scorpion for his evening imbibing, comfortable in the setting and enjoying the eccentric innkeeper‘s company. Oddly, much of the time Annie is the one sitting on the rim of his glass, dipping her beak into his pint of ale, but after the glass is partially empty he seems to be feeling the effects nonetheless.

Hi everyone.

I’ve been sitting on an idea for a while and wanted to see if anyone was interested. We’ve got a lot of people from different cultures here, and at least where I come from, one thing most cultures have are traditional dances. Now I don’t know about you, but I love to dance, and I always enjoy learning about new cultures.

So would any of you be interested in forming a, uh, dance club? Each member could have a turn to teach the rest of the group a dance from their home -- or just learn new ones, if you don’t know any! I was thinking we could start with a cha-cha, but obviously that depends on who’s curious about what.

[Mark isn‘t his usual chipper self today. He‘s much more somber, and his voice is softer than usual. This is partly due to not feeling himself, partly because it‘s not the day for happiness.] I’ll make this brief. After all that, some of you might need to get a few things off your minds.

As always, I’m here to listen.

[Locked to Friends (if you think you’re on here you are)]
I know that was a horrible experience for virtually everyone. If you’re hurt, please let me know. Heck, let me know even if you’re not.

[Private to Charles]
That PTSD support group? We might want to revisit the idea.

[Infirmary Spam]
[Mark doesn’t look so great. He’s paler than usual and badly-rested if the shadows under his eyes are any indication. He’s been stitched up after Victor’s attack, his stomach wrapped in gauze, and he winces if he turns or bends at the waist. But nobody’s going to stop needing help because he‘s got a few cuts, so he’s in the infirmary all scrubbed up and prepared to do everything he can. There’s plenty he can’t -- he’s not a doctor and so many of the people injured this port badly need one -- but if there are smaller wounds to be dressed, medication to be administered, and patients to be soothed he is available and ready.]

Hi everyone! For the new people on the ship, welcome aboard! I'm Mark Lilly, unofficial Barge social worker, and I'm available if anyone wants any information, needs a warden to access a room, or if you just want to talk. My cabin is 6-18 if any of you want to get ahold of me. My door's always open before nine PM.

I'm really excited to meet all of you!

[Medical filter]
I understand we're severely short-staffed after Merlin's disappearance. I'd like to volunteer to help. Of course I'm not a doctor, but I've got EMT training and can help out with emergencies.

[Private to the Admiral]
Sir, I'd like to request that Sylvanas Windrunner's cabin be changed into something a little cozier. Um, if possible. Please.

[Private to Sylvanas]
I've got a proposal for you. Hear me out, I don't think you'll be sorry.

[Private to Megamind]
Please say you're doing all right.

[Look who it is, mr. Sunshine himself! He's death-tolling, but still sitting up and keeping busy, already worrying about everyone but himself again. All his messages are in text, as his throat's still sore and bruised from being strangled. He tried to talk earlier and produced a sound much like a bluejay with a bad chest cold, so he includes emoticons instead of inflections.]

Can anyone tell me what happened in the last few days? Why is the infirmary so full? :(

[Warden filter]

Is there anyone who can take Sylvanas Windrunner to Zero? She isn't likely to go along easily.

[When the camera blinks on it focuses on one Mark Lilly, his regular clothes unusually rumpled and his hair messy, as if it hasn't been combed in nearly a week.]

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't been available for the last few days. This was my first experience with a Barge coma and I hope it doesn't happen again. The whole thing's kind of disorienting. If I missed anything you might like to talk to me about, I'm open as always, just give me some warning. [The therapist needs coffee.]

By the way, who repainted my apartment?

[The feed is dark, silent and empty until a hand strikes a match; the communicator is propped up to focus on three unlit votive candles on the chapel altar, Mark's voice narrating from offscreen.]

We've all been through some horrible things lately, things I'm sure we'd rather forget. But there are some things in Silent Hill that are worth remembering.

Zev Bellringer deserves to be remembered. [He touches the match to the wick of the first candle.] Dr. King Schultz deserves to be remembered. [He lights the second candle, blowing out the match after he does.] They were both our crewmates, fellow passengers who touched us, inmate and warden alike. Not all of us were close to them, but none of us are unaffected by their absence.

Everyone in Silent Hill deserves to be remembered, especially those we had to leave behind. [He lights the third candle off the second and places them in their neat, sturdy little row.]

Where I come from it's customary to honor those we've lost with a moment of silence and reflection. Please join me, if you'd like to.

[The feed records nothing but the three little candles burning in the darkness and silence for a full minute before cutting off.]

Um, look.

Not really being much of a fighter or a genius on the fly, I'm not sure how much I can help in this upcoming port. What I can do is ask the Admiral for supplies of basic survival gear to pass out to anyone interested. I'm talking backpacks, waterbottles, compasses, tents, freeze-dried food, rain ponchos, flashlights, emergency blankets, that kind of thing. I'm going to try to start putting together packages for any teams that might go out, and if you want one, please let me know.

[Private to Satsuki]
How have you been feeling lately? I wanted to talk to you about your friends again.

[Private to Junko]
It has been a long time since I heard from you. What's going on in your life? Are you still despairing?

[Private to Anya]
I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. You wanted to talk?

Steph reminded me of this yesterday – welcome back, Steph! – and I realized we hadn't had a formal discussion about what to do with Toshiko.

I know there have been threats of violence, and I think we can all agree that none of us want to see her hurt, even if we're angry with her. Therefore, I want to recommend that she's escorted by at least one warden every time she's out of her own cabin. This probably isn't going to be fun for anyone but it's for her own safety. There's also the possibility that someone under the duress she's going through might attempt self-harm or suicide, so any wardens who work with her will have to be on the lookout for that. Is there anyone who'd like to volunteer? [Please don't let Mark be the only one with his hand raised; he can't exactly safeguard Tosh in the bathroom or the shower.]

Secondly, Iris and I have been discussing a, uh, public forum with Toshiko, basically. Consider it a hearing, or at least a chance for her to explain her thought process and actions. This isn't necessarily a completely therapeutic act, although this is something I'm planning on working through with her. As a social worker, it's my opinion that the people on board who were hurt or upset by her actions deserve an explanation – sort of like the Truth and Reconciliation Committee after apartheid, although this is obviously not racially motivated. So I want to reiterate: not a punishment, but still a necessary part of the healing process.

As for an actual punishment, I'm not sure what the regular procedure is on the Barge. I know she's already served a week in Zero, although that might not have been very corrective. So... is there anything else humane and productive you can think of that might be worth exploring?
moreincommon: (Teachable moment)
Well, everyone, I'm sure we're all relieved to see the emergency's over and we're all working to smooth things out. Toshiko doesn't have access to the inner workings of the ship and she's under warden custody for the time being. I understand quite a few of you are very upset with her, and I want to assure you it's natural to be angry. There are a lot of people on board who have been very hurt by the recent events, and that isn't an easy emotion to let go of.

For that reason, Drs. Xavier and Lecter and I are instating more services for those who are having trouble dealing with this. We're pooling our resources to offer a support group for anyone suffering from trauma, and we're also available for individual counseling sessions if you just want someone to talk to who won't judge. This is a healthy way to let go of your anger and to learn to grow as an individual, and we'd all like to help you along the way.

– And before I forget, I know it's the first of April, but let's not get carried away with the practical jokes, okay? [He really doesn't need it to be April Fool's Day after that event – this is not a relaxing holiday for him.] No painful, harmful, humiliating, prejudiced, or destructive pranks. They're not funny and we've all had enough excitement for one week.
moreincommon: (Displeased with this progress)
[For once, Mark looks irritable. Not angry, anger takes more than having his freedoms stripped away, but frustrated with a side-order of bewilderment. This wasn't what he signed on for, although to be fair it's the sort of thing Twayne would have tried at the DOI back home. They can work through this, he's sure of it, but it's unfair that they should have to.]

From what I can tell, the Admiral is suffering from a nervous breakdown and vying for control by depriving inmates and wardens of their jobs and freedoms. Until we can directly get ahold of him and figure this thing out, we're going to have to make do with what we have.

One of the passengers gave a good suggestion earlier about stockpiling the resources we still have. Our supplies still haven't been cut off, so we're not hurting yet, but we don't know if this is going to get worse before it gets better.

I don't think it makes any sense to take away the TVs in the common rooms, so I'd like to volunteer the one in my cabin for anyone who wants to watch something. It can play DVD, Blu-Ray, and LaserDisc but I don't have a VHS player, so I hope that isn't a problem. Oh! And I do have some movies if anyone wants to borrow them. Otherwise I think the library is still lending for a while a least. Right, Chromie?

Hi everyone, just wanted to share a few safety reminders for leaving the Barge. First of all, of course, don't go out alone. Always bring someone with you in case you get into trouble and need help – or in case they do. Reminder two, keep your communicator with you at all times. Reminder three, be very considerate of any local creatures and-or people and only approach them peacefully. We're on their territory, and we should respect them. Reminder four, don't take anything from outside. It's only right to leave the area as undisturbed as possible. [Yes, he beams as he says it, and fully expects everyone to comply with his rules.]

Reminder five, have fun! The ocean floor can be kind of scary, but it's also a beautiful place.

[Filtered to Toto, Fukawa, and Junko, and by extension Senji and Arkady]

After being stuck in Zero for so long I think you kids could really use a little time to stretch your legs and explore. What do you say to a swim around outside? As long as we all stick together I don't think we'll have any problems.

GREETINGS, MORTAL SCUM! [The voice on the screen sounds human, if humans had throats lined with sharp metal forks. The accompanying face is twisted, demonic, with glowing eyes and a wide, sharp-toothed leer.] MARK LILLY IS GONE. I'LL BE TAKING HIS PLACE.

[Suddenly the picture changes, features curling from a hellish mask into that of a rather beautiful redheaded woman in her late 20s, perfectly normal – apart from the pink hue of her skin and the two tiny horns jutting up from her forehead.] Ahem. Callie Maggotbone, Mark's boss at the DOI. I don't know why he thinks his therapy crap will do any good in space, but he's tried dumber things.

So I guess I'm here to "help," whatever that means. Just – give me a jingle if you need anything! [Callie beams and gives the camera a little wave before dropping the look from her face, suddenly snapping out of character.] Ugh. Who do I have to kill around here for a virgin's-blood latté?

[OOC: Say hello to Mark's psychotic demon girlfriend, Callie! She's not always quite this bitchy. Really. Not always. Replies will come from [personal profile] boobsandevil.]

Good afternoon Bargewell High students, teachers, and parents! This is Mr. Lilly with a few general announcements. First up, as Principal Masters announced earlier there is a PTA meeting tomorrow night. I'll be attending if any of you want to discuss your child's progress in school, and students, if you're worried you're welcome to talk to me. [Whether you like it or not, Masters. No power in the 'verse can stop proper youth mentoring.]

Secondly, thank you to all the adults who agreed to speak at the career fair assembly. It'll take place just after the lunch hour this Thursday, and we still have a few time slots open so if you'd like to share your professional experiences with the kids please contact me.

Finally, I want to put some nasty rumors to rest. As I'm sure some of you heard, staff did recently catch a student in possession of reefer cigarettes. The parents were informed and the drug was confiscated and destroyed. While this is upsetting for all of us, let me remind everyone that this was a single incident and we've found no evidence that the student body is suffering from "reefer madness." That's just a big city thing, people, seriously. I don't think we've got anything weird to worry about.

That's all, ladies and gentlemen! Thanks for your time.

[All throughout the breach, Mark Lilly, Bargewell High School guidance counselor, is basically a teacher from Pleasantville. He's often in his office on the ground floor of the high school, on sentinel for students in distress or reading up on this "child psychology" thing. He can also be found around town greeting EVERY SINGLE PERSON he sees, because he is that guy at the party who no one seemed to invite yet somehow knows everyone's name.]

– it working? Is this on? Test, one two three... There we go.

Hello there everyone, I hope you're all doing well. My name is Mark Lilly, I'm a social worker from New York, and I'll be serving as a warden here. I'm still not exactly sure what that entails, but I want everyone to know that I'm here to help in any way I can. Just think of me as a listening ear for whenever you need it.

It's a real honor to be asked to sign on and I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you. If anyone wants to contact me, I'm in cabin 18 on level 6. Just don't knock on the door after nine PM.

Now. Can anyone tell me if there's a social services department on board?

[Warden Filter]

It feels a little underhanded making an announcement for only half the ship, but it doesn't seem like this is an offer everyone will appreciate. Back home, I'm a therapist. Since it looks like I may have some downtime before I'm assigned an inmate, I'd like everyone to know my services are available. If your inmate, or you, has something to talk about, I'd be happy to lend an ear.
