Um, look.

Not really being much of a fighter or a genius on the fly, I'm not sure how much I can help in this upcoming port. What I can do is ask the Admiral for supplies of basic survival gear to pass out to anyone interested. I'm talking backpacks, waterbottles, compasses, tents, freeze-dried food, rain ponchos, flashlights, emergency blankets, that kind of thing. I'm going to try to start putting together packages for any teams that might go out, and if you want one, please let me know.

No, I've tried controlling it. I can get a handle on it but some days it's worse and some days it's better and there's not usually a way to tell how bad things are going to be until I'm hit with it.

[Another quick glance at the door to make sure it's shut. Chris crosses his arms, staring fixedly at a point around Mark's kneecap, flushed]

[Mark settles back for a minute, pondering this. Of course turning someone straight is impossible (unless you were going to resort to magic), but giving Chris a chance to get this out could only be beneficial.] When you say some days it's worse and some days it's better, what do you mean? [Chris at that moment looks like he wants to disappear into the floor from shame. He hugs his elbows and won't look up, looking stunned that somewhere he'd found the courage to finally admit what he was.

[The patting seems to only make Chris withdraw tighter into himself, as his eyes get a little wide from the frustration and hatred he's feeling at himself]

[Chris finally looks up at Mark, tense and angry]

I can definitely help you. Believe me, this is not as big a problem as it feels right now.

[He nods, shoulders relaxing the tiniest bit. He's not ready to hope yet, but it's something. There's a light at the end of the tunnel]

First, we clear up a few things about sexuality. It is never set in stone, it can change over the course of your life. In fact, most people are attracted to members of the same sex at least once in their lives. So as weird and gross as these feelings might be, don't worry. You are not a freak of nature, lots of people have gone through this.

[He nods unsteadily, looking only half-convinced]

That is a possibility, especially if it's the first time you've felt this way. But we're still going over the hows and what-ifs here.

In no way are you the only one going through this. There are people of every race and species I've ever heard of with same-sex attractions. [That is, if that species has more than one sex.] It's normal, and healthy, but it can be terrifying to deal with. As for being attracted to a close friend, that's, well, that's always awkward.

[With sudden aggression]

It is not normal.

God damn it, Lilly, it's not the friend part, it's the gay part.

Are you serious? God, how can something be less fucking natural? God himself comes right out and says it's fucked up.

I don't know much about religion but one of the basic points is that God loves everyone, right?

Okay, your family might not be cool with it. But honestly, how do you think your friends would react if they found out about this?

I think they'd pretend like they were cool with it to not hurt my feelings.
