[Los Angeles had been entirely carefree for Mark; with Sylvanas starting the port off in Zero he had no innmate to look after and had been free to make his way around the city being the world's most identifiable tourist. Somehow he escaped being mugged, and has brought back gifts for two inmates.

The first is a package marked "For Touko, from Mark" and is reasonably small: A photo scrapbook he put together, including pictures of the Hollywood sign, Sunset Strip, the LaBrea Tar Pits, and other famous landmarks around the area. There's even a picture of Kurt Russell ducking into a convenience store. On top of the book is a pair of these.

The second gift is for his own inmate, a dress that seemed made for her (and was a lot less revealing than most of what she already wore). Mark leaves it outside her door and doesn't knock, knowing she'll find it eventually. There is of course no indication who it's from: there's a printed label on the box reading WINDRUNNER but nothing else.

Much, much later he sends off a few private messages.]

And going back and...settling the score a little bit. I've got a plan laid out.

Go back, stop the money going into Sing-Sing where my uncle Ralph is. That'll stop most of the trafficking he's doing behind bars.

Rat out my godfather, who's a corrupt cop on our payroll.

Make sure my mom's doing okay.

Come back here, warden until I can get my deal to bring Hit-Girl's dad back. Ask him to help partner up with me in undoing the shit my dad and me did.

And then possibly go kill myself for fucking destroying my dad's entire legacy, I dunno.

Except for that last part, this sounds like a good plan.

Yeah. I've thought about it for months.

And you're sure it's the right thing to do.

Do you think running would make your dad happier?

My dad never thought I could hack it in the first place. I was a disappointment. Doing this would just turn me into a bigger disappointment.

Do you think you're a disappointment? Because I have never once had that thought.

I'm his first-born son. His only son. And I'm nothing like him.

Of course I'm a disappointment.

Did he talk about what he wanted you to be like?

We didn't really talk on that kind of level. More like him, probably. Before he knew what I was like, then he just wanted to keep me out so I wouldn't get hurt.

That doesn't sound like a dad who'd be upset you didn't follow in his footsteps. That sounds like the kind of dad who wanted you to be your own person.

There's a difference between being my own person and turning around and fucking everyone who ever helped us. Fucking over the surviving family.

But your family doesn't just have the resources to continue perpetrating crime. You're going to go back to a world where you have influence and access to money. Why not use both those things to try and help your family turn a new page, not just stop them?

Because it's going to be a power struggle. My uncle's not going to give up ground and my godfather's in too deep. He's committed federal crimes under a badge. You don't walk away from that.

And they both think I'm this weak, scared little shit they can walk all over.
